In 2007, I began my original website, Sonshine's Haven. In 2007, it was turned into a blog and used to keep family updated on my first husband's fight with liver cancer. He passed away November of 2009. We were married for 34+ wonderful years and this journals some of that grief process I've gone through.

I have since remarried another widower, but Mike is missed dearly, and will always be a big part of my life.

At times, all of us will be called to act as witnesses to the suffering of another. We will be unable to affect the outcome physically. Words will fail us. Prayer will seem futile. And yet, the act of bearing witness to someone else's trials is a sacred sorrow that offers and astounding glimpse of eternal joy." by Ginger Garrett

Dear Blog Readers,

I wanted to let you know that I have decided for my blog to become a private journal, so when you go to my site anymore, you'll understand why you can't view it any longer.  I have appreciated your interest, comments, love and support; more than you could ever know, and I will never forget how much you did for me and my family. Thank  you from the bottom of my heart.

Sincerely,
Beverly McSheehy-Ballard

It's day seven of our western adventure, celebrating Glenn's and my first anniversary.  It has been exciting, hysterical, and exhausting all at the same time.  We decided to travel with our four dogs, and even as good as they have been, it has been challenging at times.  Plus, I developed some cold/allergy symptoms the day before leaving, which left me with an irritated sore throat and cough all day.

We experienced frigid weather and a light snow in the panhandle of Texas, on our first day.  Our first night...somewhere in Oklahoma, wasn't anything more than a place to lay down our tired bodies.  It was one of those places along the side of a highway, that I would have never have stopped there, if it I had seen it in daylight; but when you're flat exhausted, it really doesn't matter.  They were sweet though, and handed Glenn two Valentine decorated cupcakes for us, and a gift bag of doggy treats.  That was truly sweet!

Our next day of travel was LONG and started off badly.  Glenn traveled down the road to buy us two large Diet Cokes before heading south.  Immediately, one of the dogs had an accident. So I was trying to fix that by turning around in the front seat traveling down the road.  Thankfully, I didn't get car sick, like I usually would.  But when you have two dogs doing this head covering up move, to fix their mess, my goal was to quickly calm things down and get them to go to sleep.

In my effort, a quick move in the truck made me lose my balance, and down came my knee on my Diet Coke...spiltting my styrofoam cup and spilling soda everywhere.  Not a good way to begin the day.  We were also having a hard time finding a gas station when the dogs decided they needed to go "outside" again.  The only place around was 16 miles past our connecting route, off a muddy, gravel highway, which gave us muddy paws and now dirty comforters in the back seat.

My two were pretty excited about the stop and did their business quickly.  Glenn's two, put their bodies in reverse, as I tried to walk them.  I literally had to drag his two back to the truck, while they used their feet as brakes!  Walking two big dogs that want to pull you one way, and two little ones, stubbornly not moving, put me in that mode, that someone was going to have to give.  (I have to admit, I wasn't feeling the joy of the trip at this moment.)

But onward we went south.  Because we had to drive a little off course to find gas, it put us getting in to Carlsbad late.  But, once we crashed that evening, we awoke to find God placed us in a nice location.

We spent two nights there and spent most of the day visiting Artesia, which had some beautiful bronze sculptures,

and several beautiful pecan orchards.

Later in the day, we drove up to see the Living Dessert, which had a couple of zoo animals.

That final, full day in the area, we went to Carlsbad Caverns.  What a beautiful place......but STEEP decline into the cave!  Especially, for anyone with bad knees, or like myself, who just recently had foot surgery on the ball of my foot.

We had such a nice time.  We even got a little goofy and took some silly pictures.

From there, we headed south and farther west.  Passed the beautiful Guadelupe mountains...and then for a long ride pass acres and acres of nothing!  Whenever I think our town is a little too busy and over populated, I will remember that long road from El Paso to Silver City!

Here in Silver City we wanted to see the Gila Cliff Dwelling's which was a two hour drive up to it, and the same back.  It was also quite a hike and climb.  I throughly loved this!  But it also showed me I'm not 30 anymore.  I was just grateful I stayed on the cliff and didn't fall off.

So, we had a great day yesterday, even after being a little tired.  There were no accidents, even though the cliff's edge was very near and unprotected.  A misshap could easily happen.

Today we rested.  In the late afternoon we ventured out to see if anything was open, and we got a quick look at the downtown area.  And what happened next, is not only embarrasing, but unbelievable after such a trip as we had to the Cliff Dwelling.

We were on a street downtown and I spotted a mural painted on a wall that was so colorful, I asked Glenn if we could stop and take a picture.  In the process of stepping down out of his truck, I went to step up on the curb (which is usually 6 inches..maybe?)  This curb was about 18 inches, and I went down, injuring the same foot I just had surgery on.  It recieved a scrape on the top of the ankle, my knee and my elbow, as well as my ankle being swollen double it's size, but I think I will live!

So...the journey continues tomorrow.  We'll be on the road again.
